Frequently Asked Questions

How long does to take to get to Ascension Bay?   We are about 2.5- 3 hours south of Cancun along the Coast.   The last 30 miles are on a very unimproved dirt road.

Is transportation included? Isla Blanca: includes transportation from Cancun, more distant pickups are possible at an extra charge.

Cozumel: you must get to Cozumel then transportation is included

Ascension Bay: transportation is included

What time to you get picked up and dropped off on the Ascension Bay trips?

05:00 AM in Cancun,  drop off 7:30 PM

06:00 AM in Playa del Carmen  Drop off  6:40 PM

06:30 AM in Tulum, at your hotel lobby.  Drop off 6:00 PM

Are rods and reels available? Ascension Bay yes - all others no

Are flies and leaders available? Ascension Bay has some available for purchase,  the others do not.

Do the guides speak English? The guides speak excellent "fishing"  English  like "50 feet - 10 o'clock,  no further",  oops,, spook!!" and it is not an issue while fishing.   However if the conversation turns toward anything else in life you will struggle if you don't speak Spanish.  All of the guides are of Mayan decent and have been guiding fly fishers for over 10 years. Their English is OK. Belize or Christmas Island are English speaking countries.

Are there lots of fisherman there? Ascension Bay is tens of   thousands of acres of flats,  We are one of the few lodges that are actually in Ascension Bay ( not the lagoon like Boca Paila or Pez Maya) It is rare that we see people on the flats because they are so vast.

What about money? The lodge can accept US dollars or Mexican Pesos for any bar tab or tip you have at the end of the trip.  They give a good exchange rate.  Remember they don't take credit cards and the nearest cash machine is 2 hours away.

Is the road to Ascension Bay as bad as you say? The road changes from season to season and depending on the last time they graded it.  I have had some trips that have taken 3.5 hours from Cancun's airport and others that have taken a little over 2 hours just after they grade it! Assume it is bad and plan accordingly.  We have some tips for renting cars that we can pass on.

Is it safe? The most dangerous place is Cancun so the further you get away the more safe it is!.
