The fly fishing opportunities in New Zealand are vast and varied and it is impossible to describe every trip. Hopefully these pages will give you some insight into the county and the fishing that can be had. There are hundreds and hundreds of rivers with good fly fishing in this country.
There are also just as many varied ways you can choose to fly fish New Zealand. From back county helicopter fly ins, walk ins - moderate to strenuous, easy 4x4 delivery to streamside, floats, or a combination of all the above. For accommodations you can choose all out luxury fly fishing lodges, mid range fly fishing lodges, bed and breakfasts, motels and camping.. Many of our clients choose a combination of guided days as well as some unguided days. I have to report that the success rate on the guided days is so much higher but then again we all know fly fishing is a good excuse just to be in New Zealand. Most of the fly fishing streams and rivers are public in New Zealand although access to the water may be restricted if it is private land. All our guides have gained access over this land to hit the best, least fished water.
We can team you up with the best fly fishing guides in New Zealand and provide any level of accommodations. The guide is quite critical to your success here. These perfectly clear fly fishing streams have limited numbers of fish, they are not that many fish per mile in these rivers, but the fish are larger than normal. Since these big brown and rainbow trout are spread out the most effective way to fish for them is by sight. Knowing where a fish is is so much more effective than blind casting likely looking areas. Your guide delivers you to the fish and coaches you through the process - spotting fish, especially in poor light, this is what their eyes have been trained for. When you walk up the river with them, they go on point like good bird dogs, usually on fish that you would never see. Then you just need to clamber down the river bank and quietly move into a good casting position. However, you could now be looking into the glare of the reflecting the sky, no able longer see the fish. This is where the guide chimes in with the play-by-play: “Next cast two feet up and three feet to your right”, “He had a good look at it, so change your fly”, or “He’s still feeding”, so you know the game is still on. At the end it is either “He’s got it”, or the dreaded “He's spooked”. But one thing’s for sure – two people can catch more fish than one.
New Zealand Fly Fishing guides tend to be a little more expensive than you might expect until you spend a day with them. They are worth it. They pick you up early, get you out there all day long , and then drive you back and make your lunch in between. It is not an 8 hour affair.. Prices range from USD $475 - $650 for 2 people per day.
