Fly in river rafting trips differ from our other rafting/camping trips in one major respect; these descents take place beyond all roads. Access is by helicopter, to these remote rivers where some of the largest trout in New Zealand can be found in the clearest water on Earth.
Angling for these world class trophy trout can be demanding and extremely challenging. I recommend these wilderness river trips for accomplished anglers seeking the ultimate. This is stalking huge rainbows and browns in deep fast flowing mountain rivers, where a carefully delivered dry fly or perfectly drifted nymph can bring a confident response from an obviously huge fish. Do you have the steady nerves to time your strike when you see a 3 KG ( 6.5 pound ) rainbow approach your dry fly? I'll bet you would like to find out!
The major rivers of the Central North Island of New Zealand are world renown for producing the largest river rainbow trout in the world.
Rafting on most of these trips can be moderately difficult, but more gentle descents can be arranged by strategic placement and retrieval by helicopter. When river conditions permit, rafting out to the vehicle, through thoroughly inaccessible gorges, where cliff walls rise straight up from the river, and an seemingly endless chain of boisterous rapids punctuate your journey. Some of these gorge pools can hold significant numbers of trout at times. These areas of the river do not see other anglers, only those willing to boat in and out!
This type of river trip accounts for 90% of our largest trout, and accounts for virtually all our trout in the double digit category (over 10 pounds).
These river trips are recommended for relatively accomplished anglers, who are comfortable casting at moderate distances with good accuracy. Generally speaking, if you can cast a weighted nymph or air resistant dry fly 60 feet, you are likely to do well here. This is mostly stalking, pursuing very large trout.
Having outfitted over 100 of wilderness river trips for anglers aged 19 to 92, we can confidently offer you the river trip of your lifetime, safely, professionally, guiding you to some of the worlds best fly fishing for true New Zealand trophy trout.
